A glimpse of Pune’s rock show

Let the clock strike 5 on a weekend, and most of Pune’s party animals begin a rigorous ritual observed more than a religion; since long. Getting into¬†the party mood. Having born and bred in Pune, I had since childhood kept one of my eyes fixed on the local party scenes. And I loved it even more when there was foreign participation, because music is better when unbound by boundaries. Music, both local and global, always found a home in Pune –¬†Detroit of the East. And Oxford of the East.¬†The facts of Pune mastering the partying circles of society can be seen from common¬†economic indicators like the number of clubs / pubs etc., their age, their performance, growth, and how many had to shut down (rare phenomenon).

One of the popularly preferred destinations by real enthusiasts where they all have been at least once; is The High Spirits.

There was a Tribute to Queen show arranged last weekend. The crowd trickled in as early as 6 PM. The real storm was a little after 9 PM, when even a snake wouldn’t find its way to reach the bartender for the next round of beer. Well, I still did because I was ready to struggle.

Very unfortunately I missed out on getting the vocalist Mr. Fernandes’ snap; though seen in videos. The guys below along with a few others are the famous ones known to play rich and complex music; and who play around the country for private parties and public events. Their audience transcended into the best known forms of dancing and cheering; which is a seal upon the fact that any random crowd in Pune’s uptown parties, leaves the musicians’ soul filled with that most required sense of satisfaction.

While Pune hasn’t been home to many anticipated international rock shows recently, there are economic factors around it like the State’s Entertainment Tax, proximity to Mumbai¬†etc. And this almost-chronic¬†shortage in supply to the party-demand in Pune; further fuels the hunger for a rock show every weekend for all Toms, Dicks, Harries, Johnsons, Nancies, Julies, Marias, all their fathers, mothers and children too! I need one rock every month, and that’s a bare bare barest¬†minimum!!
